How do you bring a 1970's day light basement family room into 2017 ?

It is a blank slate there are sliding glass doors on the east end as well and a wood burning fireplace on the north wall as well as double bifold closet and the door entry on that same wall. The south wall has a large window and the west wall is blank and the room feels somewhat long and narrow. I need to do this on a budget.

I would break it up into a couple different sitting areas, with a game area, or a bar area, so it doesn't look long and narrow. So, maybe by the fireplace, put two chairs facing it. All with same color scheme. Check out things on Pinterest.
well you didn't say what the walls are...but if it's paneling...you can paint it....you can cover it with wallpaper....or you can build shelving units over it....using throw rugs on the floor i agree with above answer ...make designated areas ....sounds like a great area to me...
I am lucky all the walls are sheet rock but the double bifold doors are so 70's and the fireplace is gray cinder blocks it goes the ceiling and has a wood storage built into it I am wondering if a wallpaper accent wall on the west end wall would help make it not look so long?
For the cinder block fireplace, don't be afraid to paint it or even tile it. You can get tile cheap during sales, or even leftovers on Craigslist since you wouldn't need a large amount. Paint the walls a light color...white, pale yellow, etc....and use some bright pops of color for accents to brighten the space.....pillows, pictures, etc. I agree about breaking the area into separate spaces...a sitting area, reading nook with bookshelves, small table and chairs for games, snacks, etc.
