Make a paste of cream of tartar and Lemon juice
Try "The Works" Rust removal. I buy it at the dollar store and it works! You have to let it sit for awhile before rinsing it off but I've had good luck with it.
make a paste of equal parts salt, flour, and white vinegar. Apply the paste to the brass and let sit for up to an hour. Rinse with warm water and buff dry.
