You could also find other uses for the pottery. Use it on your desk to hold pencils if smaller, or if larger, use it to store magazines or blankets. For over your headboard, you could hang a curtain rod and then hang photo frames from it using rope or cord. You could hang a shelf above and place pictures on the shelf.
Pictures would help. Just remember less is more with just a few favorites.
How about exchanging some of the pottery for baskets? I have large collection of blue and white dishes on the wall that I break up with baskets and small wreaths. You don't have to get rid of things. What I do once in a while is take everything down, rearrange and store a few things for a couple of months. The next time, the stored things come out and some others go in storage. It's like shopping in my own house. There are plenty of things to hang over a head board besides art. What about a quilt or textile, or architectural items? Here is a pic of an example:
