Ketchup or tomato paste and vinegar actually works very well.
Mix vinegar with baking soda, to make a wet paste. Not so you are sticking wet paste to brass, rather must scrub brass with cloth & mixture.

Tomato based products. I use tomato sauce, but ketchup as mentioned works too. The acidity in them eats away the tarnish. You can also use Brasso, it's strong and works great.
