I love mason jars as vases. There are a huge variety of options right here on Hometalk - http://www.hometalk.com/search/posts?filter=mason%20jar%20vases As far as your specific question about tissue paper - I have mod podged tissue paper on the outside for vases, luminaries, etc. http://www.hometalk.com/diy/decorate/rooms/upcycle-jars-to-candle-holders-2-options-27836804 I did square pieces of paper in this post, but I think the torn layered look looks better as it appears more stained glass like.

THIS IS A TREND NOW...TIE SOME LAYERS OF COLORED ROPE AROUND AND AROUND THE LID GROOVES....WILL BE LOVELY
Add a like colored ribbon and bow and I think it would look great!
I think it would look lovely!! My daughter used blue mason jars filled with yellow lilies on her reception tables. Everyone loved them!
I used them for the tables at my daughters wedding with tea lights.
You can lightly spray paint them and then antique them with acrylic paint in the brides colors..... Add Ribbon or Twine or Raffia bow depending on her style of wedding.. these were the mason jar center pieces used at my cousins Daughter's reception July 2014. the thick board you see is what all the Gourmet Cupcakes were set on... the bottom was draped with painters Canvas and also used as table covers.. these were just the Green jars already with baby's breath and Hydrangea Flowers.
Mason jars are great for decorating. Unfortunately mine at at our summer place. However I filled each with colored sand less than halfway, added a tea light and tied a ribbon with a large flower on the outside. I place them along the walkway and receive so many compliments. Maybe consider putting a battery operated tea light in each of yours. It could make the tissue paper glow while being concealed.
What about using the tissue paper in the bottom? It's a lot more inexpensive than those stones you can buy.
I used a mason jar with shredded paper and a tea light as a centerpiece. It didn't have a wedding theme, but I think it would look beautiful for a wedding with a flower!
