Unless you have an industrial spray painting unit, you're going to be using way to many cans of spray paint and it won't look even. Best bet is to paint with a roller that has a deep nap to get in all the nooks and crannies.
Make sure you know how to use spray painter before tackling your brick. It is a big job and takes patience. As stated above, you might want to consider roller for large areas and brush for trimming.
If the brick was nice enough I would agree but it has a really rough surface and the flecks in the pattern are all mismatched. We watch the fixer upper and they always spraypaint ugly brick to give it a fresh look. That's what we would like to do for great street appeal, if we do it right we think it will last a while. Just not sure how to do it.
Well I have read all the other comments about not painting the brick but I think the right color would really brighten it up. Make sure to pressure wash all surfaces to be painted first. You can rent a commerical paint sprayer and that would give you the coverage you need. Spend the money to get good paint made for brick/masonry exteriors and you won't regret it. Watch lots of videos on youtube. Good luck.
Hate to be a killjoy but.... Brick NEVER has to be painted UNTIL you paint it. Then you will need to repaint it just like you would a painted wood house on a regular schedule. I love brick because of the ease of maintaining it. I would put up new shutters, add something to the front porch, etc.
you may be sorry if you paint your brick....paint peels because of moisture...brick retains moisture...might make a huge mess...instead of painting...decorate....climbing plants....rose bushes...etc....make the yard beautiful...and then that is all you will see.
I like it just the way it is! Maybe spend your dollars on trying another trim color. Or some new plantings. But painting brick brings lots of issues in the future, just as commenters hv said.
Don't paint the brick! Paint the railings black to blend in more. Get rid of the white stone, it's dated. Put in a couple of small flowering bushes and some mulch. Paint your front door and frame.
We just put in the river stones as this area was fully overgrown with weeds. The rocks are based on current rock garden trends on pinterest and just a base where I will be putting a large pot. I am doing tones of grey, terracotta and a grey white. The brick is really rough, ugly and dated. We don't want any black which we feel dates too quickly. The gutters will all be painted in a grey brown and my front door I just painted in terracotta tones.
We removed all the overgrown trees blocking the windows and driveway, replaced the letterbox, painted the front door and railing and about to put on a panel lift garage door. We have planted a Japanese pistachio tree on the front left.
I have my own reno business...I would never paint brick....if it is dirty power wash it. From the picture it looks like you already have a moisture problem....bricks hold moisture...if you paint them that seals the moisture in....come winter the moisture freezes...then guess what happens...paint blisters and bricks break....they need to breathe....
Hi Judy, we have power washed it but it's not aesthetically pleasing, it is course/ rough and has a fleck of red but the pattern is not consistent. We will just paint everything around it for now and maybe any ideas for decking/ garden might draw the eye away?

I'd use a brush or a really high nap roller. It will give you better coverage.

Just remember, now you never have painting maintenance. You may want to power wash your brick and live with it.
Painting brick is a major, expensive chore the first time and will have to be repainted the same as any wood house in the future.
I live in an old brick house and would never think of painting it.

What about white washing?? Perhaps it will not need repainting as full coverage painting would. I have not tried it but love the way it looks.
I like the brick too. I would jazz up the metal railing with some spray paint and set out some bright colored flower pots.

You could do a "German Smear" technique using mortar to get a great look.
