If your iron is not coated with teflon, a fine steel wool pad (not the kind with soap in it) works well. I use it dry before adding a drop or two of water.
I have used a Brillo pad and after wiping it off with a damp rag I run the warm iron over a waxpaper. My mom taught me that trick.

Vinegar works
I use from Ace Hardware, Golden Fleese. Scrubs bottom of iron then wipe off.
spray a little vinager and run it over a piece of wax paper while it's warm.
do itlike you clean a coffee pot...w white vinegar. Sit the plate face down in it...leave it for a couple of hours..then use a plastic scrubby on it.b
I have used a product called Iron-Off by Dritz. Works really well and quickly. Should be able to get it someplace like Joann's.
After cleaned, I always run mine over a piece of wax paper to make it glide smoothly.
