find a gray tone that compliments your room white, lt. grey, dark grey
A gray stain, or pickling, would require stripping the doors with a stripper that says it removes stain first. Here is a video on the technique.... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKt-OkS_4GA I was buying stain yesterday and minwax has a gray stain now.
When you say "went with gray woodwork" ... are you referring to the baseboards, that they are painted grey? Or are you meaning, perhaps, some other wood in the basement is painted gray, such as a chair rail or shiplap? If your baseboards are a white, paint all the doors the same color (white) as it always looks nice, fresh, stylish and is shown in most decor magazines.
A lot of magazines are showing black interior doors lately. They can be beautiful with the right colors next to them....
Hi Rae, If you have any flooring left, you could use that on your 2 doors and paint the other one you could paint to match! Or, they make some really nice wood look wallpapers! https://www.google.com/search?q=wallpaper+that+looks+like+wood+planks&tbm=isch&tbo=u&source=univ&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwi52rbeiYjVAhURxCYKHcI-A70QsAQIQg&biw=1600&bih=794
Have fun!
Thanks Suzette.
They are beautiful and if they weren't the plain slab doors this would be an option! Not sure how it would look on those.
Wallpaper? Unobtrusive paint color to blend, new doorknobs? Bifold could be a problem. They are just not attractive. Can you remove it and use the closet as an alcove with some shelving and a small frig for your husband's mancave? Look up barn doors on the internet. We did that in a room that had an ugly door. Husband built and hung the galvanized pipe. I stained cheap doors from Lowe's ($28 each) and then we hung with barn rollers ($40). I think it looks great and people comment on how nice they are.
Keep plugging away, Rae! You'll be glad you did. I also have one plain door - inside my condo foyer. I can paint the inside of it because it is considered "my property" under condo rules but the outside has to, naturally, stay the same as the other doors and is not my property. I need moulding to add interest to its flat appearance but it's difficult to get to a big-box store so I'm on the hunt for two picture frames that might fit. If found, I'll mount them on the door then paint the door (and frames) white.
