Shower Rod issue In Old Bathroom

I recently purchased an older home. When I went to install my shower rod it was too short. I realized it was because of an old cupboard on the other side that was making the wall length shorter. I bought a circular rod that is normally used for a clawfoot tub but soon realized I would have to put it at the top of the ceiling where I have about 4 inches to play with to install a rod of any kind which would make my shower curtain short ny about a foot. I wouldnt even know if they make shower curtains longer than what you buy at the store. Also if I put it lower it will have to be installed on the cupboard door and I wouldnt be able to open it. Any suggestions here? I need some help please!

It looks to me like you either need an L shaped rod to turn the corner, and 2 curtains. That would also need a support at the corner. With the circular rod for a claw foot, you might need extenders for the drop rods. Ask at your hardware store. Take one of the drop rods with you.

I would put your rod up by the ceiling and get the extra long shower curtains.... https://www.google.com/search?client=opera&q=extra+long+shower+curtain&sourceid=opera&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8

If you have a decorative fabric one to go over the plastic liner, you can just add a wide band of fabric on the bottom. You could even use Stitch Witch iron-on to avoid having to sew it on.

Since the rod assembly is going to hinder the use of that cupboard anyway, why not remove it? You can resurface the wall cheaply with tile board. If you are going to use the circular rod, you may want to look into the floor to ceiling shelf rods for you bathing products. Access to the tub corners is a hassle through the curtain. I have a clawfoot with that assembly and every time I reached for something the shower curtain would get up close and personal, sticking to me and pulling around....it was awful.

  • I had the same exact problem in a vintage house. I did an "L" shaped rod with ceiling support and 2 curtains. I used standard shower liner and made no sew curtains from pretty king sized sheets. Attaching a link with a photo as an example only. Most big box home improvement centers will have something in stock for a decent price. Another option, if you want a semi industrial look would be to use copper piping - will take a few fittings but can be done. You can do this and it will turn out great!

Start by checking out shower curtains online--Wayfair.com is one place where the curtains are offered in two different lengths. I'm sure many others do, too.

Buy another curtain same as the one have. Make a valance that makes your shower curtain longer. You can attach it with Stitchwich or sew it on. Trim the new valance with ball trim or beadtrim to match your decor.

I'd go with the industrial look and get some pipe and fittings and just figure a longer rod and its pretty easy to make a shower curtain from a flat sheet - and the possibilities are endless for the prints, colors, patterns

You could get a tub door. Put it on side near shower head, it keeps water from splashing out but doesn't run full length of the tub. $200 and up but it's a modern look.

I'd say, take out the cupboard and hang an extra long shower curtain from ceiling tracks, like the dividers that are used in hospitals. I can't imagine that wood cupboard is going to like being in all that steam and heat, anyway, with sliding doors!

not sure but would it be possible to mount circular rod hanging from ceiling, lowered to proper height. It would require more shower curtains though. Just a thought.

Eye hooks from the ceiling is a great idea Shanita. Also, I have made all my shower curtains out of double size flat bed sheets. I only folded one end over and stiched it to the length I wanted. Added grommets to the top and already had my bottom hem. You can also get a white flat sheet and add your own design. Here is a picture of the finished product. I couldn't back up far enough to give you a better shot. I don't like shower curtains that you get at the store. They aren't long enough. I like mine to come all the way to the floor.

any way to hang something on the ceiling! Like hospital curtains...won't touch the door because it's attached to the ceiling..?

  • Christie Christie on Jul 21, 2017

The brass rod is beautiful and costs a pretty penny too. I have used tension rods, not only for shower curtains but for regular windows. No hardware, no leveling. Also you can get from Ikea a wire hanging deal. It stretches thin but strong wire between 2 hanger mounts (you can get straight supports for a lengthy span or to turn corners. It comes with clips to hold curtain or kids art or hand wash delicates, It has MANY uses and costs less than $20

This layout is crazy. You step in to the tub to get to the cabinet ? How does a wood cabinet not get moldy or rotten ? Even with a shower curtain in front ? I'm wondering if the cabinet could be modified with a pull out drawer that came out of the side ? It would pull out against the wall ? I'm glad that others have seen this and can help you out.

what a bad bathroom job in its day and I'm sure it drive you nuts!! How about a closet rod from pipe and grommet long curtains to camouflage as well.

The house was built in 1940s so back then they wouldn't have had a shower. As to why they put a cupboard over the tub I'm confused about that. These are all great ideas everyone. Thank you very much for all of your input :)
