Gray is a very neutral color so I wouldn't be afraid to add a burst of color at this point. You already have the lighter gold colors in the fireplace so your palate is very open. I would try adding a warm color at this point. If you're afraid of color try starting with a more muted tone or only do an accent wall.

you could use just about any colour, but I would avoid anything in the brown/beiges. Burgundy or a deep wine would really make a statement on the fireplace wall, but you don't mention your furniture colours/style..

A soft yellow would look nice or even a soft Aqua would be beautiful. Good luck on your decision.
