"Lightly scorching the wood with the flame from a butane torch brings out the grain of the wood, highlighting it against the light coloration of the remaining wood. Good luck!
you can use the propane torch that plumbers use to solder brass parts but that could take forever if you have a lot of wood to prepare. the attached link is for a torch head that attaches to a propane tank. https://www.ebay.com/i/161877964622?chn=ps&dispItem=1 good luck and keep a spray bottle of water handy or a garden hose.
I've seen people use blow torches to bring out the grain.
blow torch....small canister of propane, torch attachment to top hub. light with long lighter.
Some people will use small propane or butane torches like plumbers use for small projects but on larger projects it is easier to use a torch used get rid of weeds. They hook up to a standard barbeque propane tank with a hose.

Be aware of your surroundings and don't use where you could set other things on fire and most of all start further away from the piece you want to torch and move in to get the effect you are after.
Just use a home shop torch if its a small project.
