I'm taking art lessons and thought it would be fun to decorate some of my clothes.

  • You can use the same techniques but with different paint. You need fabric paint, specifically meant to paint on clothes - my personal experience, natural fabrics work best - any craft or hobby store will have a multitude of options for you. Have fun!

Acrylic paint by itself will not wash out of fabric, so it would be okay to decorate your clothes. BUT it will be stiff, which is why you can get a fabric additive for the paint which leaves the surface much softer. This product is sold wherever acrylic paints are available.

Thanks. Victoria. I have dropped enough acrylics during lessons, to see how the paint does not come out of my apron. I had looked at a fabric store by me; but did not see an additive. I'll check Aaron Bros.

There is an acrylic medium on the market to use specifically for fabric painting. I'm not sure if it's made by Liquitex or Golden, maybe both. Art supply stores should have it, or order online.

Thanks, E s desanna. The name helps. Kinda hard to look for something when you don't know who makes it.

Acrylic paints are safe to use on fabric if you blend them first with a fabric enhancer. This product makes the paint soft and pliable so it isn't stiff on the fabric. It's sold in stores that carry acrylic paints.

Guess I'll have to look harder. I struck out at Micheal's Crafts and Joann Fabrics.

I just dropped a bunch of acrylic paint on my carpet and I used Zout (sold at Walmart) let it set and then laundry detergent and you would never know it happened. I have used it on clothing before it sets and it worked.

Sorry I misread the question. You can mix textile medium with acrylic paint.

My Hobby Lobby sells it. They seem to put it where its hard to find. I asked a salesperson and they took me to it. It's delta creative textile medium and sells for $5.99 and I used their 40% off coupon and got it for less. Have fun.

You can add textile medium to acrylic paint. Over the years I have found that if you put paint on untreated fabric it stays there wether you add textile medium or not. This is especially true if paint lands on your favorite jeans and dries.

Thanks. I guess I'll try the textile medium. My instructor said she thought that acrylic alone would be stiff. I have gotten some on my painting apron, but is was already stiff before I began wearing it to art class.
