If you'e gonna replace some, replace ALL of it. Then use the appropriate nail for the new siding. It comes with instructions.

put down rubber mulch
Stainless steel or high-tensile aluminum ones are better. than Galvanize.
The nails should have ring or spiral shanks; smooth-shank nails tend to pop out.
Your nails also need to have heads on them.
Ideally, your nails should penetrate the base wood at least 3/4" deep.

You can use screw instead of nail. There's a screw that they sell in home depot that specialize to use in this area and that's what I have in my home and I never had to worry about those lose nail popping out due to temperature changes
