I've never tried it myself, but others have said you can use toothpaste and and a soft cloth to buff it on the headlights and then clean it off with water and mild detergent and buff it dry.
My car is getting very old. I have used 3 different methods over the years. I bought a kit at Walmart and followed the directions and it helped for a while. A year or so later, I used a mixture of baking soda and vinegar to scrub the headlights being careful not to scrub anywhere but the headlight lenses but scrubbed in a circular motion. That worked quite well. The last time I noticed the headlights were yellowing I used a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I moistned the Eraser well and used it in a circular motion and was amazed at the yellowoish/brown that came off on the Eraser, so that is what I will use in the future. Rinse the lenses well and dry with a soft cloth and be sure to protect the areas around the headlights so you don't damage your car's paint.
I did my daughters car. Used a white (not gel) toothpaste and a damp cloth. A dab of toothpaste on the cloth and rub in a circular motion a small area at a time. Keep the toothpaste moist. A separate wet cloth squeezing water as you rub. Wipe as you go along to see the progress. Once done put some paste wax over the lenses. Should last about a year. They will get oxidized over time again and turn yellow.
Every time I clean my mirrors, they end up having tons of streaks and almost look worse than before I started. What could I use to clean them that won't leave streaks...

toothpaste did not work for me, neither did a lemon / potatoe cut in 1/2 & sprinkled with salt....
