I would use some natural twine or fiber rope.
Glue some wine corks around the outside, this will make it easy to hold a drink, not wine of course. Good Luck!
How about some strips of leather or pleather?
You could frame them with small pieces of wood
at your local Lowes or Home Depot they sell strips of wood to finish the edges of countertops...but be careful once you take the plastic off the back they are VERY sticky. (though someone told me once about a strip you iron on...)
