How do you stop wood stairs from squeaking?

For extra help, dip the toothpicks in petroleum jelly (Vasaline). The lubrication can get them in slightly deeper & it can also partially rehydrate the wood.

Squeaky stairs are almost always the result of overly dry wood. If your stairs are wide enough and not used by children/pets, you can clean & rehydrate one edge at a time.

1 Mop each tread & riser with Murphy's Oil Soap or an equivalent product mixed with warm water as directed.

2 Buff dry with a microfiber towel.

3 Place painter's tape approximately 2" in from the left, right, or riser edge. If the front edges need attention, get those while doing the riser edge of the tread below.

4 Using a seperate microfiber cloth, gently buff in lemon oil. Let sit at least 24 hrs. Then buff up excess. Sprinkle with talc if needed for traction & remove excess. Finish by removing tape.

5 repeat steps 1-4, rotating edges, weekly until squeaks stop. There after, do one set of edges monthly (results in quarterly moisturizing of all 3 edges).
