High heat in summer often turns my fish water green. There are fish safe chemicals you can use to cure this problem. Clean filters weekly if needed. Check with garden center or pond supply store.
Koi, as you've learned are not like gold fish. Gold fish will eat the algae, koi no. Direct sunlight is what's making it grow so fast. There are products that will reduce the growth at your local pet store or online. Follow the directions to the tee so as not to disturb the koi.
Hi Lisa. Are you able to back flush any of the filters? We do this once a week. We also have a UV light that kills the algae to keep the pond clear. Some people purchase barley to keep the water clear as well. Another suggestion is to add trap door snails. They will eat the algae and help keep it clear.
Little barley straw bales are available at local nursery or amazon. https://www.amazon.com/Summit-130-Clear-water-Barley-2-Pack/dp/B0002568YK/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1507042042&sr=8-1&keywords=barley+straw+bales
You need to get a bluing liquid from your local Fishery or from a Tractor Supply or Aquarium Store. You can also buy it online. The bluing liquid repels the Suns rays and helps to keep the pond from getting green. It does not harm the fish. Also, put in an Algae control agent, you can get the "The Pond Guys" online. You can also get the bluing agent from them. Look them up on the Internet. I use both!
