Are the boards pretty much bare wood that don't need sanding? Or do they have stain and or/varnish on them? If they are bare wood, you can use pretty much any kind of paint you want, depending on the look you want. If they are already finished, with a varnish or something, the easiest way to go is chalk paint because you don't have to sand or prime, you just clean the surface and paint! Good luck!
On old wood, that has never been painted, you still want to use a primer.
