Well yes, but I would start with a clean slate. Sand the surface first, use a primer, maybe a dark neutral or gray. Let dry completely and then whitewash. can you whitewash the board without primer first? I don't think the whitewash will adhere.
is it stained and then coated with a varnish? you will need to strip the piece if it is. after stripping -wash the piece with vinagar and water. then sand, wipe with a clean cloth, apply the white wash.
