Glue? Not mortar?
Hi Diane Watson :) Below is information I found about how to get the glue off the stones that contractors has glued together. Good Luck and thanks for using HOMETALK for a solution to this problem. Hopefully none, or not many, will get broken, so you will be able to reuse them :) In the first link, the information you want begins at #5:

Scrape. If that doesn't work, try softening the glue with baby oil. Sounds nuts, but if it works you look like a genius. If it doesn't, the stones smell nice. Scrape the adhesive off and sand any that remains if you need these to be super clean. Otherwise, use either thin-set mortar to replace them or more adhesive. Check your home center for a good adhesive-- it'll be near the caulks.
