I have a dressing table purchased at a thrift store in the 1970s. A friend's father was a master of painted furniture making beautiful faux wood grain. It is very worn by now and I was preparing to paint it to go in my remodeled bedroom. However, when I look at the end panel he painted, I hate to cover it. The questions I have for you experienced DIYers, would it look ridiculous to paint all by the side panels? I think it might. The colors in my room are navy blue, and white. The wooden table is brown with darker wood grain. I thought to paint the dressing table the blue trim color and distress it. Any suggestions?

You can get a tool to make faux wood grain. Look in the paint department of a big box store.
Chalk paint!!! Just redid a chair. Hutch & dresser & Love losing the wood look. . EASY & Quick Slap on a few messsy coats (dries in 15 min) then wax & buff out. Can be expensive suggest purchase a basic brand at local home depot type store ....
Yes I think it would look silly to paint everything but the side panels...but I'm not a huge fan of mixing paint and natural wood...I have seen the top left as wood or even some of the drawer fronts (those pulls look awesome and would look stunning with a glaze highlighting their features!) my suggestion would be to paint the entire piece, but as I say I'm biased.
