You can get a tool to make faux wood grain. Look in the paint department of a big box store.
Chalk paint!!! Just redid a chair. Hutch & dresser & Love losing the wood look. . EASY & Quick Slap on a few messsy coats (dries in 15 min) then wax & buff out. Can be expensive suggest purchase a basic brand at local home depot type store ....
Yes I think it would look silly to paint everything but the side panels...but I'm not a huge fan of mixing paint and natural wood...I have seen the top left as wood or even some of the drawer fronts (those pulls look awesome and would look stunning with a glaze highlighting their features!) my suggestion would be to paint the entire piece, but as I say I'm biased.
