What's the scoop on straw bale gardening?

I've heard that you can grow your garden on top of straw bales - I would like to hear about all of the details.

actualy you grow in the bales. You have to put dirt etc and you have to condition the bales. Have you ever bucked bales? They are not light, and as my cousins found out. They are not care free.
Make sure it's straw bales not oat bales...we made the mistake one year and covered our potatoes with a bale that we got out of the barn...we were also growing oats in the garden
