you are on the Right track- lightly sand, remove sander residue with rubbing alcohol...it won't raise the grain of the wood.
as long As you do the prep and let the pieces dry thoroughly between coats, you should be fine. Make sure you put some sort of finish coat on so it’s durable.
Hi Lou,
Take your time, and 3 thin coats are much better than 1 or 2 thicker coats. If you do happen to get brush marks in the work, wait till the paint is thoroughly dry before spot sanding the area and go over it again with a couple of thin coats. The paint should be thin enough that the brush marks flow into each other and once the paint starts to go a little tacky, don't go over it again as it will make the paint go 'ropey' and streaky. Spray painting will give you the best possible finish but using a brush properly can give you very good results too.
Make sure the outside temperature is right before painting. I have had some interesting times with paint this summer due to temp and humidity.
Sand between coats to take care of any irregularities. Use a tack rag to remove the dust from sandings.
I have a question please where did u purchase your table and what do they call that style? Thank you and good luck with your project
I use chalk paint on the furniture i repaint. There is no sanding or priming. If you have to use wood glue to fix an area you can paint right over the wood glue with the chalk paint and it turns out great. You can get chalk paint in any color and i love it. You also have to get the chalk paint wax. When it dries you take a cloth without any lint on it and rub the wax back and forth the way the grain goes and that's it. Easy. I don't paint anything with regular paint anymore.
I use chalk paint, but I always sand first. I prefer to fix any bad spots also. Feel free to check out some of my projects....I also have a FB page for the furniture I refurbish. Wax is great for chalk paint projects that will see light use, but for better protection I seal with poly. I do the majority of my painting inside where it is climate controlled. When we take a piece out to seal with poly, we do need to make sure the weather is cooperating...humidity isn't your friend. lol
I did a buffet in my kitchen and my kids lay glasses with drink in them and I get no rings. You have to make sure you wax it with the chalk paint wax and then it's very durable. I'l also been cleaning it with Mr. Clean antibacterial spray and it's fine. I love this stuff. It's really awesome.
They have a top coat for the chalk paint. I'll send you pictures.
Why can't I put pics on here from my phone?
