Does shiplap always carry a rough raised surface?

- SHIPLAP...... can it be hung on the horizontal? Would you reference it as the new beadwork ? Do you feel that it’s already trending out ? Just wondering... does it always carry a smooth surface or does it carry a rough surface .....

Most shiplap is hung on the horizontal, and yes, it usually has a smooth surface. It could be the new beadwork, but I think it's usually just a cheap way of covering a wall. I am not one for trends, as later, when the trend is over it just looks dated and more money has to be spend redoing it.
I jumped on the shiplap wagon and Shiplapped my entire bathroom. I bought .5 mm sheets of plywood at Home Depot at 11.99 for a 4x8 sheet and hung it horizontal on a walls. I had to sand some of the edges because it was a little rough. It is a smooth surface. If you go to Pinterest, and search Shiplap, you will get a ton of ideas.
Trending out...my feeling is it is like everything else...you never know with decorating and fashion, it's popular now but 5 to 10 years from now it will be out and then the cycle will repeat again years later. It keeps us DIY'ers busy ;-)
Shiplap is a very old way of building a house. Nothing every goes out of style. Just wait long enough and it will be popular again (but only sailors should ever wear bell bottoms again. Ugh!)
I love shiplap, too. I hate that it's a fad, though. I don't like to be a herd follower. That being said, if YOU like something and want it in your house, go for it. Shiplap is classic, been around for centuries. Beadboard, too. If you choose to put it in your house, don't worry about whether others think you're out of date with your decor. And if you want to sell the house, the buyer will know they can always make changes. Just do it because you love it, not because it's the trend. Happy decorating.
