or maybe add a glass top over it
Several coats of spray polyurethane does a nice job too. The wood hardener will only work if there is no finish on the wood.
I don't think you can 'harden' the wood. But you can use other ways to protect it. A custom glass top would be the quickest solution - but could be a bit costly if your table isn't square or rectangular (without curves). Call up local glass shops with the measurements to see what they'd price it at. You could also use roomy rectangular pieces of glass as place settings and center pieces - if this is where most of the damage is done. I don't think there is any way you can 'harden' wood by applying some sort of chemical - particularly if it has already been finished and sealed. BTW - glass is quite durable if it is well-supported on a flat surface - but you'll be chasing fingerprints a lot - if you're 'picky'! ;D
Oh my goodness, no glass top unless you like cleaning off fingerprints all the time. There are sturdy durable covers that can be made specific to your table sizze. Check with your local furniture store for pricing and samples. Best of luck.
