You can always stick with the snow, pine greenery, skates, sleds, theme. Add a redbird or another type of bird on a snowman wreath.
Snow flake or snowman. Recently I boust a large letter of our last name put hook on back and spray painted with left over copper I had. its perfect for in between seasons you can even put a wired ribbon on it or flower. It can also be used as your tree topper.
I happen to like building up to the Mardi Gras, with purple, gold, green and fuchsia. It's festive like Christmas time but not specific and encompasses Valentines and St Patrick's in the colors. After that, it's SPRING!
Plain red berries is what I do for January. A valentine theme for Feb.
I'm not sure where you live, but I just finished this one for my aunt. She lives in Wisconsin, but spends about 6-8 weeks of winter in Florida. She has it on her door here, but then will take it to FL.
Here's the DIY on how to make the wreath: http://www.crazydiymom.com/sandwichbagwreath.html
Start with a basic artificial pine wreath as a base add holly, poinsettias etc...using the pine branches kind of like twist ties (works with light strings too).. you can even start by adding fall colored leaves and mums for fall or Thanksgiving. Cycle thru January adding Magnolia leaves, lemon leaves (any larger solid type of greenery, succulents, etc) add ferns and flowering greenery (daffodils, bright birds) in spring. Let your imagination run wild.
By using wire or green twist ties (garden dept. at say Lowe's) you can take it down and change it out whenever you are in the mood.

I have one that just has picks of berries around it. You can find a lot at the dollar stores.
