Hello Kim! Here is an awesome article that tells you everything you need to know about composting. Let me say just one thing before you read it. The article talks about a compost bin. A bin is nice but isn’t necessary if you live on a large or remote property. If that’s the case just designste an area where you will maintain your compost pile. Here is the information:
http://www.thekitchn.com/tips-for-setting-up-a-simple-backyard-compost-system-202160
Find the perfect container, find the perfect location in your home or yard, and educate yourself on the items that can and cannt be put in a compost bin.
Keep it green!
you need an area designated for the Compost pile. It shouldn’t smell but it can call critters looking for a snack, I have it fenced in behind the shed. There are also compost tumblers that will quicken the breakdown of the scraps. Any thing that was once green and growing can be composted. No metals...or plastic. Cardboard is ok. My compost tumbler gets converted into a mixer of growing medium for for my above ground garden.
Put it in an area that you will actually use it. If it's too far away or an inconvenience you will probably let it slide after a while. Vegetable scraps, egg shells, tea bags or coffee grounds. No meat or cheese, dressings, etc. Also need dry carbon source. Dry leaves, straw, dried grass clippings. Be careful of adding weed seeds if you aren't going to maintain a compost pile that will have a temperature that is high enough to kill unwanted seeds.
The following is a complete guide to composting...everything you ever needed to know. Each area is broken down to give you additional info!
