i like the color above the fireplace, as to a mirror....what would it reflect? The opposite wall? The tv? Or would a family picture gallery work better?
The color of the fire place looks fine against your furnishings, unless you do no want it be be a focal point. As for a mirror over a fireplace ,to me that might not work,I would opt for a large picture or mount a TV
I would use long oval round or square with rounded corners. If the mirror does not have a design on it, you might consider putting some on it with a glass stain kit. (like they use on long stemmed glasses to decorate them).
For good feng shui a mirror should be placed on top of a fireplace . The mirror represents water to balance the fire . I love the fireplace color. The mirror I would choose would be an oval or round maybe sunburst in black
This is beautiful old fireplace with a coal grate. I would use a rectangular mirror with a antiqued gold frame to pick up the same in your food cover. A mirror with some scroll work or flourishes just at the top would be in keeping with the time period. The inside chase and for cover make me think your house may be a federal style home. I wouldn’t put your tv over it - that tends for poor angle/ too high for watching and then you have to figure what to do with wires. Be cognizant of what your mirror will reflect from opposite wall. Personally, I think I would match the chase to the rest of the room.
Mirrors are lovely and very traditional, but as a practical matter, there is that television looking soooo like a necessary afterthought. Unless you have a plan for that tv, an over the fp mount makes sense. You can frame it to the full size of the overmantle area with a few inches of depth a run the wiring loosely in the hollow area, then round the corner and go straight down in one of those surface mount concealing tracks. It will free up some floor space and turn the elephant in the room into a member of the family. The real icing on the cake will be adding trim that will tie the tv shadowbox into the fireplace. Maybe a few applied elements compati with that Edwardian wreath, a strip of moulding at the top with swags running across it?
Thank you all for your help. Great ideas here. Will have a browse in the shops. I will post a picture when I get sorted. Much appreciated.
