Leather can be stained, paint will peel. Shoe polish will work, aniline dyes will give more choices - but they are extremely poisonous.
I think painting will make it hard, and will crack with repeated use. Leather is a natural product and has to breathe. Consider leather cleaner or a slip cover. They make them special for recliners.
