Milk paint and wax finish. Easy
If the chest is already black, you can use a rainbow of colors, and it won't take much paint. If you are not sure which colors you like, use some colored chalk on a chalkboard or a sheet of black construction paper. Practice layering the colors in patches about as big as your hand. When you like your choices, pour or scoop about 1/4 cup or less of each color into small containers. Use sponge brushes and/or wide bristle brushes. You may have to prop the chest in different angles to get to the bottom edges, but that will seem more authentic. Yellow and green will look like rust, brown and gold will look like dirt. Blue and red will look like aging. But you can combine any colors you wish in layers, but not neatly overlapping. Let the bottom color show as well as the top. Best wishes 😇💖
Do a light sanding, and then chalk paint in white or off-white, two coats and lightly sand to let some of the black show through. Then seal with water based polycrylic for the top.
