Some of the tin ceiling panels (some are metal, some are plastic or foam) might give your entry the interest you are looking for... Lowe's has lots of patterns and so does Amazon. They are available in several sizes.
They can be painted any color, copper is very in right now.
Hi Rick. You can also use pallet wood and do a white wash on it. I did a ceiling and staggered them. Looks great and distressed.
Whatever you decide to do, wear a good dust mask while you're working on it and clean up the dust with soap and water rather than with a vacuum. Some popcorn ceilings contain asbestos. If you can afford it I would recommend hiring a professional to remove thee popcorn.

It belatedly occurs to me that you can use a slightly dropped ceiling that will cover and seal the popcorn. That way you don't have to worry with removing it.
