Pot metal? Prime with a good metal primer and paint with a good exterior paint. Sand in-between coats.
If this is pot metal, then the metal isn't going to rust and will only discolor over time because it's usually made of zinc. Sometimes it might have some tin, but not enough to make it rust.
If this is pop metal, I'd go with aluminum since that's the metal for my pop cans. If that's the case, aluminum is notoriously difficult to keep painted.
