Citristrip is my preferred product to strip down to bare wood.
Do you want to stain the wood before applying a seal coat?

Use citristrip to strip it. If you like the color of the wood when you are done stripping it you can forgo staining and just go to what you were planning on using as your final top coats. You can use varnish or whatever you want. If it is an outside door, I would recommend using something weather proof like marine grade polyurethane.
