My sister made one for both of her boys using their favorite T-shirts that they had while they were growing up. She and her MIL put it together then they hired someone to quilt it. They were great surprises for her kids.

Are you planning to use fabrics from the clothing of your loved ones? If it's woven fabric, you can pretty much use it like any quilt fabric. If it's knits, like T-shirts with a logo that you want saved, carefully cut out around the image, with as much fabric as you can get on all sides of the image. I'd iron on a light stabilizer which will keep the knit fabric from stretching or puckering during sewing. Depending on the size of the block you want, then you can cut the stabilized fabric(s) to your quilt shape and assemble your patchwork top. Any fabric/clothing that has beading, sequins, etc., will have to be handled carefully, and might not be iron-able, use caution when ironing. You can search on the hometalk site for ideas on how clothing is used in memory quilts by typing 'memory quilt' in the blue box at the upper left corner... MANY ideas also on pinterest, if you do that.
you can make memory quilts with photos or signatures, the options are endless. T-shirts are popular. You can go to Crafty.com and get a free download to make a t-shirt quilt.
