lightly sand, clean, spray paint with Rustoleum 2X for metal giving it two light coats allowing to dry in between, then seal with spray clear UV protectant
Spray the wrought iron with a primer made specifically for metal and then you can paint. Any home maintenance store should carry the metal primer.
I've always used Rustoleum over metal and never regretted it, it is expensive but its never given out on me. I would clean the furniture thoroughly (including power washing if you are able) and then a thoroughly scrubbing with steel wool before apply the Rustoleum primer and then Rustoleum paint.
There is special paint for out door furniture, ask in Homedepot or Lowe's, what you need to do before you paint. The rust has to be sanded, and you'll probably need a primer. Some paints come with primer. Good Luck!
Have outdoor wrought iron bench ends that I sprayed with high gloss Tremclad. It survives our Prairie cold and heat.
id remove the rust first with rust remover and use rustoleum paint
Clean the furniture well, use a wire brush on the rusted areas, then spray paint with Rust-oleum.
