My question as I watched these grandparents was always, "Why are you sweeping your yards, and why is there no grass around your house?" We have grass around ours.
Hi Earlean, it looks like your question got cut off. You can only use so many characters in the title, the box below that is for your actual question. I'm wondering if you used Restore 10 by Rust Oleum. If so, they are having a huge problem with that product. There was a class action lawsuit that closed to new people last month. It hasn't gone to court yet and I don't know enough about it to help, but most people did whatever they could to get it off and use another brand. The best way to get the rest of it off is with boiling water. I read about it, but that's all I know. If you used Restore x10 you can always try contacting Rust Oleum. Good luck.
I may depend on where you live and how much rain or heat your deck gets. Most painted decks need to be refinished every two to three years, but some in really rainy climates may have to be refinished every year depending on what the deck is made of. There are new deck products that don't have this problem, but they are more expensive to buy -- and they still need maintenance.
Some deck paint sealing products are better than others. In our case bright direct sun exposure and having a dog has our SOLID deck finish looking tired needing touch up frequently.
Proper prep and application are important.
The soild color, semi transparent and transparent do not last the lifetime the label claims despite proper prep and application --at our location. We have two decks a boat dock and shed. My husband regrets using the solid deck sealer tho it was a premium product with the longest life expectancy he thinks the clear tinted that last only a couple years looks better. The deckings wood grain and wood features camouflage wear to some degree.
I used Sherwin Williams Deck Paint, not the Deck over. A lot of the opaque deck stain has worn off, it's a constant battle. The first mistake we made was we didn't let the green deck boards dry out before putting them down. It looked great at first, but now looks horrible. My contractor friend said you should always let boards dry out for 6 months to a year before putting any kind of decking outside. Lesson learned. We are going to try composite decking if we can fund it.
Composite decking fades and bows. I hate that stuff. We used an oil based sealer which I learned is terrible. The longest lasting is semitransparent water based.
We have two large decks and it takes a long time to reapply every summer. Thanks for helping.
