Chalk paint
Chalk paint is amazing for this!
Always sand. Never skip this or your finished product will not be as nice regardless of the paint you use. Quality takes care and time. Take short cuts and it shows.
I believe there are liquid sanders at hardware stores that you apply to "bite" into the surface. Still, a little hand sanding might be better if you have some raised areas or bumpy surface areas.
You can use Chalk paint but when it dries it has has a very dull and gritty finish not a smooth finish like you would want your furniture to feel. If you want an antique look You can use a clear antiqueing wax all over, the chalk paint, then mix some paint to some of the wax maybe a shade darker to bring out the detail, It will make the the finish much nicer. You can also put a coat of clear glaze mixed with some paint and over the chalk paint and use a graining tool, I use a squeegee that I cut bits out of. But cabinet paint is the best and easiest if you don’t want to do all of that extra detail work . It covers great and leaves a nice hard finish. They also now have a furniture paint, I have not tried that yet, I think it may be the same as the cabinet paint. Some times I use the clear glaze mixed with a small amount of paint to let more of the grain show though . It gives you more a stained look. They also have a product called One Step that is a stain and poly mixed, if you just want to darken the piece and the if the finish on the piece is in good condition . All of these products are available at Lowe’s . But all of this said I still do a lite sanding. It really helps the paint adhere to the piece. Sanding is very easy and does not take but a few minutes. Just get a medium grit sanding sponge and sand just enough to scruff up the finish, then take a damp cloth then a dry cloth wipe it down to get all of the dust off. I would recommend going to pinterest and checking out the videos demonstrating all of these options. Good luck and have fun.
