Make pickles !! I'm jealous !
Or..you can use as a planter
Umbrella stand?
I have one very similar to this one... I have used it to hold a plant.... deep plant saucer in the bottom of the crock and the plant, still in it's own pot...
I also have a decorative aluminum tray that just happens to fit on the top of the pot so I can use it as a plant stand or as an end table.
I did not plant directly in the crock... 1.. so I would not stain it... and 2.. it has no drainage.
This looks like a crock, which is not ceramic but looks similar. You might want to do some research on this, because some of them are quite valuable. If you do anything to it, it could negatively impact the value quite a bit. I, personally, would use it as an umbrella stand and be very careful with it because they chip fairly easily. Please research what you have before doing anything to it.
Fill with scented pine cones, place somewhat near fireplace. Add a potted plant with its own pot so the inside of crock doesn't get ruined. Add dried flower arrangement. Place near entryway for gloves, hats , etc.
Put a nice plant in it - real or silk and change with the seasons.
Display in a prominent corner of your LR or family rm.
If it is tall enough, use as an umbrella stand. I have a very old one I use for this purpose by the front door.
Display on or nr. your fireplace hearth if you have one.
Take a bleach bottle. Wash thoroughly. Cut off the top and handle. Put live evergreen in bottle with lots of water. Insert in jug and display for the upcoming holidays. Add a bow; add some ornaments.
If you don't want it, give it to me. I collect jugs and ceramic jars. Seriously, there are loads of ideas out there just waiting for you. Browse in a local thrift or antique store and see what they have done with jars like this one.
Makes a great umbrella holder near the front door. Can also be a great planter.
Authentic ones are almost worth their weight in gold..
Have the biggest jade plant in my ‘authentic’ crock. The crock was one used by my grandma when she had made crystal pickles when I was a child. Now that I am an older adult, I appreciate that memory and I grew the plant as a young adult to it grand bush like now. It is almost impossible to move from the West window now though. Have fun with whatever you decide to do!
Start off by looking at the bottom of the jar to see if there are any markings that can lead you to its manufacture. If so, Google it to see what comes up. If none there, I would try looking at images of pickling jars to see if anything looks like yours. In any case, you can use it to hold a plant, as others have suggested, depending on size, kitchen or fireplace utensils or umbrellas.
You have a Red Wing crock. It does have value.
Turn it upside down and use as a side table... You could put a cute lamp on it or other decorative items.... Looks like a large one I have, mine has a crack but I still use it upside down, outside in the summer for flowers!!!!
Take it to an honest antique dealer...
That is a Red Wing crock, the marking is on the front, it's a 5 gallon, if it doesn't have any cracks in it then it is definitely worth money. But use it in your house, just don't put it outside if it doesn't have cracks as it will crack in the cold. A 5 gallon is good to roll up blankets and put in it as decor or even put greens with lights.
I have a Red Wing crock and I make saurkraut in it.
Mine is sitting on the counter holding my oversized cooking utensils. Like 30" whisk, 36" potato masher, 24" rolling pins etc. It handles them great as no drawer will hold them.
P. S. I've also used it to, gasp! Make pickles and churn butter.
Umbrella stand. You can also put tall tree branches or other tall greenery and put on floor or on a table somewhere. Just because it is large doesn't mean it always belongs on the floor. Also you can roll up towels and put maybe in a guest bathroom or another.
Get a piece of glass or thick plexiglass cut into a circle and use it as a side table. The bonus of a clear top is that you can still see the crock and can use it to hold decorative items, like pine cones or small balls of colored yarn, etc.
I use mine ( I own 6 of varying size) I put my flour, sugar, rice, etc. In the crocks and I found glass lids at local thrift shops for the ones that don' t have the original lids and display them on a shelf in my kitchen.
Make fermented pickles or sauerkraut. Do not put a plant in it. It’s a working kitchen item, not a decorative piece.
I would be thrilled to have one! And I would make all kinds of pickled goods. During the off season, I would use for a planter or flowerpot, flip over as a table. Whatever you decide to do, enjoy the fact you have a family heirloom with all the loving history. So envious.
Silk flowers.
If you plan to drop things in, such as umbrellas, place an old towel or something protect the bottom from impact. The crock is definitely worth something. Congratulations on a great item!
Perfect for the porch as is just add a tree for the holidays and during the summer months add a potted handing plant or a piece of wood on top as a foot stool.
