Tall ladder with the bottom set on the first step from the top so it won't slide. The top of the ladder will be propped up against the wall you want to paint. Put old towels under the top posts of the ladder so it won't scratch the wall.
Be careful.
I'd hire someone young painter that is used to doing this sort of work.
It takes setting up a ladder or some type of scaffold system. Not an easy task and definitely not for a novice. You can look on Youtube for hints how to set this up, but if in doubt, hire it out to professionals.
Tape a paint brush onto a mop or broom handle, or an extension handle, using heavy duty duct tape. Also use a slanted brush so as to not get it on the molding. And just take your time and don't work too fast. Professional painters use stilts for areas like this. If you do get paint on the crown molding, clean it off right away in the same manner. Using a very small, but wide artist type brush, taped to a handle, with the brush dampened with water. You should keep your cleanup brush ready anyway. You know you will get a little paint on the molding anyway. I would use just a wide artist brush. And they even sell the angled ones too. Hope this helps.
I used a painter's pad on an extension pole. It wasn't perfect, but I got a fairly straight line.
You can but be safe young tall healthy, bounce better, put 2 inch tape to protect ceiling n wall.may ask for help
Since you don''t have a ledge along the wall side of your stairs to help support a work platform (which is what we did with ours, I would recommend either a flexible ladder that can work on stairs by changing it's angles, or since I am afraid of heights, I would hire it out.
