I have painted them, and then put Polyurethane on them.
Yes and very ez to do, see photo below and it’s comes in nickel and many colors. I took the door off and placed it n Horus the taped off and used newspaper n the areas you don’t want the spray paint to get on instead of taking off the knobs and hinges, it’s just one less step.
Knobs can be painted, but not the hinges, they will not work or the paint will rub off.
Pick a handle set from a closet and try it out.. if you don't like the results... the knob sets for a closet are cheap to replace.
Rust Olium sells spray paint in brushed nickle. ( HomeDepot) I would spray them with a primer first then a couple of light coats of the brushed nickle then when good and dry spray them with clear sealer.
Don't forget you have the fittings that latch the door that will show when the doors are open.
Also hinges usually match the door knobs and they have to be able to turn. I would try paint on the hinges for one door for a month and see how that paint wears.
I'd use brushed nickel spray paint.
In the past I have removed mine and spray painted them. Holds up well.
sure..either take them out of the door..or wrap tape around them really well. Get some rustoleum metallic spray paint..it comes in silver, brushed nickel, rubbed bronze, brass, gold...and does a great job. I have even done things in hammered copper..and its all in spray paint.
