Does it save any electricity to run ceiling fans, box fans, dehumidifiers, etc on a lower speed?
Get written quotes from each provider and compare carefully. Every provider is different. Also check local building codes to see what is or is not allowed. In some parts of the country you can get whole house batteries to store energy and never have to use public utilities ever again. In some places that is not allowed or illegal.

We started with solar water heating. The unit is independent from other heating sources and it will give you a idea if you like it or not. You didn't mention if you home has a south facing roof or not. Also didn't let us know how many people this unit would accomodate. If I remember correctly they suggested one solar panel for every 2 people.
Start small, add to it as you can. It becomes expensive what with storage batteries, inverters and all. You are wise to think of solar and wind together.
