Tile and pressed tin tiles are more common, the newest idea Ive seen is mounting a (sealed) fireplace fireback.

I used the stainless steel panel sold for that purpose. It is not just fireproof but cleans up so easy and matches my SS oven perfectly. Got it at Lowe’s and was not expensive. Just sticks up with construction adhesive.
We used license plates in my modern house. We bought a lot off eBay for a cheap price. The plates are all metal and easy to cut. We have since had friends copy our idea when they remodeled.
The popular style today is white subway tiles in a brick pattern and they're not expensive and easy to install for do it yourselfers ......also consider glass tiles w a matching grout ...they come in soft modern colors .....You could also frame a sheet of stainless steel or metal sheeting for a super sleek look
