Fertilize in spring and fall. Find a thatching rake to pull out the dead grass. Be diligent pulling the crab grass..
You can cut out around the tree, and possibly use a edging, smother out the grass with carbide, newspapers and heavy plastic. Fertilizing the lawn is done in 6 to 8 weeks intervals. Not knowing your location I cannot recommend your first application which is a crab grass pre-emergent
Crab grass preventive in the spring. Scotts makes a good one. Eliminated my problem. You can put down fertilizer now - it will be labeled as such. Scotts makes a good one.
Do you know when your fertilizing program starts.Long Island is most likely different.Do not attempt any chemicals at this point, the crab grass should have already died down.To make it easier to pull out now apply Hot boiling water, and as stated before line the area with newspaper, cardboard and heavy black plastic so next year you will have a handle on the situation
A nonbroadleaf spray will kill your grass, too.
I would check with a local nursery or landscaping company. Nurseries will give you free info. Landscapers may give you free or low cost suggestions.
Hi Ken, start by dethatching the lawn, you can use a thatching rake for this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNklBrBxY2k or a dethatching blade on your mower
