there are additives you can buy that will make a type of "fresco" consistency. Check Home Depot, Lowe's, etc. Fusion Mineral Paint also has a fresco powder that I have used and I love it. You can make a little texture or a lot.
Usually a good quality ceiling paint is thick and you will need a plush roller to apply.

Go to hardware store and get some aggregate. Comes in small, white, round and larger balls. Add to paint and apply. I've used it on ceilings that had small hairline cracks in it and it worked great.
