How can you make chalk paint glossy?

I am refinishing a dining room table and chairs for my daughter for Christmas. She wants the paint portion to be glossy. Can I paint with chalk paint and then cover with a poly to get a glossy finish? Or is there a wax I need to use to get a shiny finish? Please help, we are running out of time and I am not sure if I will be messing everything up if I try the chalk paint and poly coat. thanks!

Yes, don't use wax. Use a Matt top coat for your wanted dull areas and an Aquathane in the sheen you want for the shinny area. All water based products.
It is a good idea to cover the chalk paint with polyurethane to preserve it as it is easily damaged. Polyurethane will give it a glossy shine. Hope this helps Jen.
Hi, Use clear or Antique Wax,
You can use a wax with a glossy finish!
No wax and definitely not Thompson;s Water seal. At least three coats of a high gloss water based polyurethane. Goes on clear, doesn't yellow. Oil based has a yellow tinge to it and does yellow over time. I use Minwax products but any good brand will work.
William stated it exactly. That's why i recommended Aquathane not polyeurethane. Have fun with your project
Glossy finish poly is what you want to use. Water based.
I really like varathane's polyurethane. It's water based and comes in semi gloss or gloss for more of a shine.
