Jub it down a bit to take the shine off it
I think the easiest ways would be to either use a wood stain or paint: If you want a dark ages look you can use a gel stain on a rag and rub it into the groves then wipe off the excess on the other sections; If you want to dull and lighten it, I would take a very little bit of light grey or pale yellow flat paint (what ever you have so it matches the rest of your décor) on a rag and lightly rub it over the paint "with the grain" and add or subtract until you like the look. Maybe you want to use stain on the red and paint on the black. Have fun.
you can rough it up with a light sanding and then use dark wax, this goes a long way so apply carefully. when dry you just buff it to a wonderful lustre.
