One year I hung a fake garland on my mantle and over my windows and hung my favorite ornaments that way rather than putting up a tree.
Get some picture frames from your local dollar store. Remove the glass and the backing. Using just the frame, hang your ornaments from ribbons and then staple them to the top of the back of the frame. You can hang several in each frame. Then you can hang multiple frames on the wall making a collage effect. I recommend using the 3M hangers so you don’t have a bunch of nail holes in your wall at the end of the season.
There is a trend to use a dress form and display your ornaments. Also, go to a local thrift store and look for large, clear, glass vases/jars and use them to put your ornaments in. You could also add some fairy lights to give a little more sparkle to the vases. (ps; clear vases can be purchased at thrift stores for less than a $1.00 each)

A metal cup holder from a thrift store, spray painted may hold up to 8 ornaments. I have placed a group of them in similar color family in a fancy crystal bowl and have also placed them in a huge brandy snifter shaped glass. They look great that way. Also consider a small table top tree. That is all I have now.
There was a segment on the Rachael Ray show today (Dec. 4) showing several ideas for displaying ornaments without a tree. The info. is probably on the show's website.
