Tips for Distressed Painting?

I have tried several techniques. The last one I used grey chalk paint and black wax. I wanted the wood mainly black. But it looked way better before I put the wax on it.

  • I've done an old wardrobe in an chalk paint called 'old linen', then put clear wax on it. It could look better, it all looks beige now. As for dark wax, I've seem on YouTube videos (and a Google search) that say not to apply dark wax directly on the chalk paint. It will darken your project too much. You first have to put a coat of clear wax, because the chalk paint absorbs so much. After it's set then use your dark wax to add character where you want it. Wipe on, then wipe it off. Do a Google search on 'How to apply dark wax to chalk paint', I'm sure the topic is described much better than I just did.

I don't know if black wax is the same as dark was, but my dark wax looks almost black. It's for a project I haven't completed-redoing my bathroom cabinets with chalk paint and wax.

    Wishing you lots of luck!

I've read you're supposed to apply clear wax first, then dark wax for visual affect. This way the dark wax doesn't change the color of the base paint.

the Lady who sold me the paint and wax told me to try it the opposite way since she didn’t have black chalk painT. Honestly it worked fine but im Not sure how it will weather or how i would do it differently next time.

Paint only some areas then rub down. Then paint some other areas and rub down, until you get the affect you want.

Have you tried the vaseline technique? Ive use it with acrylic paint and chalk paint.... simple! Rub a small amount of vaseline on edges or wherever you want to distress....paint..... when paint is almost dry grab a paper towel and wipe off paint at vaseline areas. You can use a low grit sand paper too. Google vaseline technique for painting. Good luck!

Chalk paint will grab a dark wax and really darken the paint. Since youve already waxed with the dark, apply a clear wax to help remove the darker wax a bit. Do this in small sections so you can determine how much you want to remove. Good luck!
