Very dark paint, similar to mahogany, with color sheen?

I'm not sure whether, or how, this can be done, but I'd like to paint a railing so that at first glance it looks very deep brown, or almost black. But I want it to have sort of a colored glow, sort of like how a duck's neck can look black in some light but teal in others. Some sort of paint and glaze? I have no idea where to even start.

You could try painting the railing black, and then using a teal colored glaze over the top of the paint to give it the sheen you are looking for. Experiment on a test surface to see if it comes out the way you are hoping for.
I LOVE your idea but sadly I don't exactly what paint products to use. I'm hoping someone will answer your question who has real knowledge but here are my thoughts. You could paint it then add an iridescent glaze or perhaps a wax. I'd talk to the people at Lowes or Home Depot. If you don't get an answer there, try one of the local hardware stores that are smaller but might have more knowledge. Wishing you the best & Happy Holidays!

You could use Unicorn SPiT in one or several colors, as a glaze. Then seal it to get a glow that is almost 3D. 😇
I go with Michele. Paint the railing your dark color. Then use teal and dark turquoise diluted with glazing medium for the color change. You can sponge paint with makeup sponges or dry brush with each color very lightly. Then seal with at least three coats of a water based polyurethane. Try it on a scrap piece of wood first till you get the effect. Play with the colors and have fun. One thing, if it doesn't look good you can go over with the dark.

Use tinted glazes.
Base color - black.
Tint glaze with as many colors as you want. Paint the different glazes in a pattern or streaks.
