I would first use oil based Kilz for one or even two coats, then paint the cabinets white. My husband and I did this to our kitchen and it looks great.
ESP then blind out with undercoat, before using Satin topcoat.
Check out blogs and websites for GeneralFinishes products. Their cabinet paints and sealers are commercial grade for durability and user friendly. Lots of info out there on these products and people who have tried other paints say GF are the very best.
Agree with Sidjaclar. General Finishes products are the best I've tried. Below is oak cabinets before using GF Dark Mahogany. Love the new color and finish and so easy.
So are you trying to go for a painted finish or a whitewash with the grain showing?
